SIM Boston Member Spotlight: Sue Bergamo

SIM Boston recognizes Sue Bergamo, Global Executive – CIO, CISO and an industry Cybersecurity advisor and thought leader. She’s been active with the Boston SIM since 2014 and currently serves on the Boston SIM Executive Committee as Secretary. She is a long-term SIM leader serving in several capacities including the Board of Directors, and in the past as co-chair for the RLF Mentoring, Career Development, and Program committees.

Recent professional accolades for Sue include:

Troublemaker 2023 - Recognized as being a strong female role model and executive in the Cybersecurity industry - Issued by Troublemaker

Cybersecurity Divas - 2022 -  Influential Women in Security - Issued by Cybersecurity Divas

2022 Cybersecurity Excellence Award - Issued by Cybersecurity Excellence

Sue’s broad recognition is no surprise given her thought leadership in the Cybersecurity space, where she is comfortable providing her perspective and expertise to the subject at hand. For example:

She’s published multiple articles in LinkedIn and Forbes Digital Magazine

Provided a recent CISO Insights video interview on the State of the CISO

We asked Sue a few questions about what she finds important in the cybersecurity space. True to her nature, she gave precise insights. “Always tell a story to make a point” and to definitely “Stick to the facts, as no one can argue when presented with the facts.”

We also asked Sue how to best gain an understanding of the CISO space. She gave us three compelling elements to getting there:

     Speak with experienced Cybersecurity professionals

Understand and embrace security frameworks, certifications, and regulations

Initiate and value discussions with data privacy attorneys and general counsel

What is the primary threat right now that all companies should be concerned about?  “Many companies do not understand the importance of having a Cybersecurity program and how it impacts their customers and brand. Security is not just about implementing a vendor solution or having a CISO on staff, it involves creating a well-rounded program that integrates people-process-technology to meet business needs.”

Coming full circle back to the Boston SIM, we asked Sue to relate the value of SIM to her.    “SIM is a family to me. We are the leaders in the Boston area, and I continue to be delighted to have the opportunity to mentor and support the next generation of IT leadership.”
