October 2020 Member Career Development

SIM Boston hosted a fantastic Member Career Development meeting last week.  Roberta Matuson, a professional career coach, facilitated an active discussion and offered her expert advice for differentiating yourself from others, and building your brand.  Members shared their career aspirations as well as tools and techniques they use to look for new opportunities. Some of Roberta’s tips included:

  • Schedule time for job hunting activities.  It’s important to allow time to pursue other activities while job hunting.  Make a schedule and stick to it.
  • When networking, take a power stance – you (a job seeker) are a uniquely skilled professional and your network connections are benefitting from your expert opinion.

Emphasize what makes you a unique candidate.

  • Focus on what your expertise is rather than trying to be all things to all people.
  • Virtual interview best practices – lighting in your face, high resolution camera, etc.
